Impact

Atlantic White Shark Conservancy

In 2018, the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy (AWSC) funded the completion of field work for a first-of its-kind white shark population study. The research team conducted 179 vessel trips, 74 aerial surveys, tagged 100 sharks, and identified over 350 individuals. Data collected over the last five years will be analyzed to determine a population estimate to be used for species management and public safety initiatives.

Furthermore, AWSC's outreach programs have impacted over 35,000 children and adults through educational science-based exhibits at our Shark Center, Gills Club newsletters and events, hands-on learning opportunities at our summer program, and public lectures on shark research and conservation.

It is now more critical than ever to raise awareness through education and expand research to better understand increased shark activity and inform shark safety strategies.
